Explore local mountain peaks, snowy alpine pastures and wonderful winter hiking trails. Beginners can book a guided beginners’ course on the Dobratsch. There are also full-moon snowshoe tours with trained rangers there, an unforgettable experience for young and old. For everyone who wants to leave the valley behind and head up high, a winter hike up the Gerlitzen Alpe, at over 2,000 metres above sea level, is a good choice. The Nordic skiing centre has a 5-kilometre cross-country ski trail with artificial snow and floodlighting. There are also ski jumps of 15, 30, 60 and 90 metres on site, in operation all year round. You will find further cross-country ski trails in the area at the Hoteldorf Schönleitn, in Finkenstein and in St. Jakob im Rosental, among other places. They can be used whenever the snow conditions allow. Another Nordic skiing centre is located in the area around Planica in Slovenia. Tobogganing in the region around the Faaker See is an experience for young and old. Have fun, for example, on the fast runs down the action-packed slopes of the Dobratsch and enjoy the fresh wind rushing past your ears. Altogether the choice ranges from leisurely to fast-paced runs, from romantic forest paths to snow-covered slopes with a mountain panorama. A toboggan outing in the evening is particularly good fun, under floodlights and with punch at one of the cosy huts. Enjoy an eventful, fun day with the whole family at the many places to skate in the area. Skates on, hat on and off you go. The Aichwaldsee is particularly quick to reach, only a few minutes by car from our apartments. It is usually even one of the first Carinthian lakes to be opened for ice skating in winter. You will find further opportunities for ice skating on the Silbersee, on the Ossiacher See or in Villach on the Rathausplatz and in the Stadthalle.
