*In no other Austrian province is Fasching celebrated as colourfully and with as much passion as in Carinthia in the south. The fun of it runs through every generation. Traditional customs are skilfully combined with modern Fasching practices and topped off with a pinch of lightness and joie de vivre. In many places the highlight of the spectacle is Fasching Tuesday, when impressive parades take place (except in Villach, where it is the Saturday).*

## Villach – the Fasching mecca for guests and locals

The most spectacular Fasching parade, and the best known far beyond the country’s borders, takes place every year on Fasching Saturday in Villach’s town centre. Hundreds of groups in their elaborate costumes and with their colourfully decorated floats make their way through the old town and bring the mood of tens of thousands of visitors to boiling point. And not only on the street: in the neighbouring restaurants, bars and shops, too, the cheerful masked fools hold the sceptre on this day. From early morning until late at night there is an exuberant atmosphere in the lanes and streets of the city on the Drava.

## Faschingssitzungen

A few weeks before Fasching Tuesday, Fasching sessions, the Faschingssitzungen, take place in many Carinthian towns and municipalities. There, sketches on political, social and local topics are performed that bring tears of laughter to many a spectator’s eyes. The entertainment programme is varied and consists not only of short plays but also of singing, music and dance numbers.

The Faschingssitzungen in Villach and Klagenfurt are particularly popular. For these, please reserve in good time to secure a seat. The best anecdotes of the Villacher Fasching are recorded and broadcast in ORF’s evening programme on Fasching Tuesday.
