Slow down, recharge your batteries, enjoy quiet moments and finally feel snow under your feet again. There are six good reasons for spending the winter on the Faaker See. There is hardly a destination where you can enjoy a winter holiday as relaxed as on the crystal-clear Faaker See. Why? Let us explain!

## 1. Skiing

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or pro, the ski areas around the Faaker See offer the right piste conditions for every skier. The Gerlitzen Alpe and the Dreiländereck are only a few minutes’ drive from the Faaker See and score not only with ideal piste conditions but also with unique mountain hut cuisine. In the winter months a free ski shuttle runs from the Faaker See.

## 2. Ice skating on natural ice

In the cold season many lakes in the region freeze over, offering all ice-skating fans, hockey players and ice stock players a mirror-smooth ride under the open sky, set in a very special natural landscape. Not far from the Faaker See lies Europe’s largest frozen natural ice surface – the Weissensee. It is also where the traditional Alternative Dutch 11-Cities Tour is held.

## 3. Winter wellness around the Faaker See

Just a few minutes’ drive from the Faaker See lies the most modern thermal spa world in southern Austria – the Kärnten Therme. The spa scores with water slides, a sports pool, its own children’s area, a sauna area and spa and fitness offers. An insider tip for all nature lovers: the Maibachl thermal spring in Warmbad Villach bubbles up when the snow melts. The warm water collects in a small spring pool that invites you to bathe in the middle of the forest.

## 4. Winter customs

In the winter months numerous Advent markets in the surrounding villages bring a pre-Christmas atmosphere and a cosy time with your loved ones. If you prefer plenty of action, the Perchten runs are the place for you. The sinking of Christmas trees in some Carinthian lakes and the star singing in Heiligenblut are customs that delight our holiday guests too.

## 5. Winter wonderland on the Faaker See

If you are simply longing for a break, the Faaker See is exactly the right place. Surrounded by a breathtaking mountain backdrop, snow-covered landscapes, enchanted forests and the water of the turquoise-blue lake, you can really let go and unwind. Treat yourself to a rest from the fast pace of everyday life!

## 6. Mountain hut magic and cuisine

In the winter sports resorts, along the pistes and on the local mountains and alpine pastures, many rustic huts, inns and restaurants invite you to make a culinary detour. Most of them score with typical Carinthian dishes and regional delicacies. The Slow Food tradition is taken very seriously in Carinthia. And not only on the mountain: in the local villages, too, you will find places to stop for a meal that delight with the highest quality and regional ingredients.
